ISTEAD & IFIELD GRAND PRIX BY ALAN COWAN

The Istead & Ifield Grand Prix is held each year between the 1st March and the 28th/29th February. Prizes are awarded at the AGM.  The rules are as follows:-

Whenever a club member takes part in a race of at least 5 miles (excluding the winter cross-country leagues), points are awarded based on the finishing position relative to the total number of runners. Races are split into four categories:- 5 to 9 miles, 10 miles, half marathon, and races longer than half marathon distance. A maximum of eight races count towards the year’s total score. Everyone can include three races of the shorter (5 to 9 miles) distance, two 10 milers, two half marathons, and one longer run.

Looking at races held in Kent alone last year I managed to find 30 races of between 5 miles and 9 miles. There were also seven 10 milers and no less than 9 Half Marathons. For the longer runs, I can recommend the Bewl 15, Thanet 20, the A20 run and of course our very own highly-rated North Downs Run. Don’t forget that any marathon can be included as the longer run. It shouldn’t therefore be too difficult for everyone to find 8 suitable runs over the 12 months of the competition.

In order to win any of the first seven listed prizes, a runner must have taken part in a minimum of six qualifying races. For age-graded prizes, a minimum of four races for the club will suffice.

The end of year prizes will be awarded to the runners accumulating the most points over the 12 months as per the list that follows.

1st Male

2nd Male

1st Male Vet (not included in the above)

1st Female

2nd Female

1st Female Vet (not included in the above)

Runner of the Year (age-graded basis) – (not already winning a prize)

Performance of the Year (age-graded basis) – (not already winning a prize)

NB – I check local results and major marathons each weekend, but if you run further afield or in a new or less well-known race, please let me know how you get on, and send me a link to the official results.

Send your results and any comments on the races to me at acowan@bcis.co.uk, acowan@f2s.com or text me on 07906-158985.

Keep on running
